Abbie Edwards recently completed her first marathon in an impressive 4:48:17, raising funds for Cancer Research UK. Abigail’s research focuses on cancer heterogeneity and personalised medicine, and her fundraising challenge was inspired both by her scientific work and by the memory of her grandmother, who died from oesophageal cancer. Running in support of cancer research, Abbie described the experience as both physically demanding and deeply meaningful, highlighting the importance of continued funding to support research that can lead to more targeted, patient-centred treatments. She said: “Understanding cancer heterogeneity is key to personalised medicine, but research like this depends on sustained funding.

Running the marathon in memory of my nan reminded me why this work matters so much. Pushing past fear – in science and in sport – has shown me what’s possible.” Donations remain open until the end of the month. Donate here.

Congratulations Abbie, we’re all so proud of you.

My primary research focus is in understanding how intracellular, molecular signalling networks control immune cell fate, and how misregulation of these molecular networks leads to haematological malignancies. My combination of immunology and haematological training lead to a particular interest in B-cell lymphomas.
